Here’s something I’ve learned after years in design:
A home looking expensive and a home being expensive are two very different things.
Some of the most elevated spaces aren’t filled with designer furniture.
They’re simply well thought out.
If you want your home to feel a little more polished, here are eight things I would focus on.
1. Hang Your Curtains Higher
Whenever possible, bring your curtain rod higher than the top of the window.
It draws your eye upward and can make the ceilings and windows feel taller.
It’s a small adjustment that can make a surprisingly big difference.
2. Pay Attention to Scale
Tiny artwork floating above a huge sofa rarely looks intentional.
Neither does an undersized rug.
Choosing pieces that are appropriately scaled for the room immediately makes a space feel more professionally designed.
3. Edit Your Décor
You don’t need something on every surface.
Leaving some negative space allows the pieces you love to stand out.
Instead of displaying ten small accessories, try grouping a few pieces together and leaving some breathing room around them.
4. Mix Textures
When a room feels “flat,” it doesn’t always need more colour.
Sometimes it needs more texture.
Try combining materials such as wood, linen, glass, stone, metal, boucle or woven materials.
That subtle contrast creates depth.
5. Use Larger Artwork
One larger piece of artwork can often create more impact than several small pieces.
Artwork should feel connected to the furniture underneath it rather than floating independently on the wall.
6. Upgrade Your Lighting
You don’t necessarily need expensive light fixtures.
But lighting shouldn’t be an afterthought.
Use a combination of overhead lighting, table lamps and floor lamps where appropriate.
Layered lighting makes a home feel warmer and more intentional.
7. Keep Everyday Clutter Under Control
This isn’t glamorous advice, but it works.
A beautiful countertop covered in cords, bottles, paperwork and appliances will never have the same impact as a thoughtfully edited one.
Give everyday items a designated home.
8. Don’t Buy Everything From One Collection
A room can start feeling like a furniture showroom when every piece perfectly matches.
Mixing complementary finishes, textures and styles creates a more collected look.
You want your home to feel like it evolved over time.

You don’t need to spend a fortune creating a beautiful home.
Before buying something new, look at what you already have.
Could you move the artwork?
Remove some accessories?
Change the furniture layout?
Bring in a lamp from another room?
Sometimes the best design upgrade costs absolutely nothing.
